Biography

Professor Lyu Aiping, a world-leading scientist in aptamer-based translational medicine and drug discovery, is currently Vice-President (Research and Development). Prof Lyu is the Dr. Kennedy Y. H. Wong Endowed Professor in Chinese Medicine at HKBU. He has been elected as a Foreign Member of the Academia Europaea in 2022 in recognition of his sustained academic excellence in systems medicine.

As Vice-President (Research and Development), Professor Lyu is responsible for the development of the University’s overall research strategy, research funding strategy, research infrastructure and postgraduate education. He supports the University in driving multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary research, and leads research teams in securing large extramural research projects.

Professor Lyu obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Chinese Medicine from Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1983. He further obtained his Master’s and PhD degrees in Integrative Medicine in Pathology from the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (now known as the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, CACMS) in 1987 and 1997 respectively.

Prof Lyu joined the University as the Dean of Chinese Medicine in 2012 and has provided excellent academic leadership for the ongoing development of the School of Chinese Medicine. Professor Lyu has been at the forefront of promoting transdisciplinary research which integrates traditional Chinese medicine with other biomedical disciplines. Prior to his appointment at HKBU, Professor Lyu was the Executive Director (Legal Representative) of the Institute of Basic Research in Clinical Medicine at China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (CACMS).

Prof Lyu’s research interests mainly focus on the translational research in Chinese medicine, including pharmacological and clinical evaluation on rheumatoid arthritis with re-classification and interventions, and the development of new drugs based on Chinese medicines. He is also actively involved in the research on the standardisation of Chinese medicine and the strategic planning and research on the Chinese medicine development in China.

Biography

Dr. Liao Pan, an Assistant Professor and PhD Supervisor at Hong Kong Baptist University's Department of Biology. He is currently a member of the State Key Laboratories of Environmental and Biological Analysis at HKBU and Agricultural Biotechnology at CUHK. He is a secretary of the International Association of Dietetic Nutrition and Safety Dr. Liao earned his PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Hong Kong in 2015 and conducted postdoctoral research at HKU and Purdue University until 2022. His research spans traditional Chinese medicine, plant and food natural products, biochemistry, and plant biotechnology and synthetic biology. Currently, he oversees seven projects, including the NSFC/RGC joint project and the RGC ECS. He has published 47 first-authored papers in prestigious journals, such as 'Nat. Chem. Biol.' (cover article), 'Nat. Commun.', 'PNAS', 'Plant Biotechnol. J.', 'Trends in Biotechnol.', and 'Biotechnol. Adv.'. Additionally, he holds six Chinese patents and one U.S. patent.

Dr. Xu is a Chair Professor in Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (UIC, a full English teaching college in China), Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Zhuhai Scholar Distinguished Professor, Department Head of Department of Life Sciences, Program Director of Food Science and Technology Program, author of over 330 peer-reviewed papers. Dr. Xu received Ph.D. in Food Science from Chungnam National University, South Korea. He conducted postdoctoral research work in North Dakota State University (NDSU), Purdue University, and Gerald P. Murphy Cancer Foundation in USA during 2005-2009. He did short-term visiting research in NDSU in 2012, and University Georgia in 2014, and followed by visiting research during his sabbatical leave (7 months) in Pennsylvania State University in USA in 2016. Dr. Xu is serving as Associate Editor-in-Chief of Food Science and Human Wellness, Associate Editor of Food Research International, Associate Editor of Food Frontiers, and the editorial board member of around 10 international journals. He received inaugural President’s Award for Outstanding Research of UIC in 2016, President’s Award for Outstanding Service of UIC in 2020. Dr. Xu has been listed in the world's top 2% scientists by Stanford University in 2020, 2021, 2022, and has been listed in the Best Scientist in the world in the field of Biology and Biochemistry at Research.com in 2023.

Fangdi Hu, professor at Lanzhou university, doctoral supervisor, is the executive Director of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Special Committee of the Chinese Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Chairman of the Medicine Food Homology Special Committee of the Gansu Provincial Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine. President of the Gansu Provincial Codonopsis pilosula Research Institute, expert who enjoys special government allowances from the State Council and the Top Leading Talent in Gansu Province. Having undertook and completed more than 30 research projects including National Key Research and Development Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation, professor Hu has also published more than 150 academic papers, authorized 19 Chinese invention patents, published 3 monographs and won 6 provincial-level or above scientific and technological awards.

Professor Lorenzo Pastrana (orcid 0000-0002-6637-346) is currently Chair of the Research Office (Scientific Directorate) at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL). He is also Professor of Food Science at the University of Vigo and was visiting Professor at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Italy) and the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco and Federal de Santa Catarina (Brasil). He was the Director of the Centre of Research Transference and Innovation (CITI) at the University of Vigo, founded the Galician Agri-Food Technology Platform (2006), and currently, he takes part of the scientific board of the Portugal Foods innovation cluster. In 2015, he joined the INL to lead the Food Processing Group with a multidisciplinary approach integrating methods and concepts of biotechnology and nanotechnology to develop personalized functional foods (with an emphasis on Food Structure, Gut-on-a-chip devices and encapsulation technologies) and active and intelligent food packaging

Amie Steel is an Associate Professor (Public Health), Co-Director of the Australian Research Consortium in Complementary and Integrative Medicine (UTS), and an Australian Research Council Future Fellow. Amie has attracted ~$4.4M in research funding and holds editorial appointments in leading journals. She is lead researcher in the development of the Contemporary Implementation of Traditional knowledge and Evidence (CITE) Framework, has authored >220 journal articles and >30 book chapters, as well as edited three special journal issues – most recently on Global Public Health and Traditional Medicine - and three public health research books. She is PHAA’s QLD branch president, co-convenor of the Women’s Health SIG, and an executive committee member of the Evidence, Research and Policy in Complementary Medicine SIG.

Prof. Chen Junshi is a world renowned food safety and human nutrition scientist, currently served as the chief adviser of China National Centre for Food Safety Risk Assessment. He is also a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Prof. Chen's research interests include: food safety risk assessment & risk communication, epidemiological studies on diet, nutrition and chronic diseases and Exercise is Medicine. Recently, he was appointed as the Chief Scientist, 2nd China National Food Safety Standard Reviewing Committee; Chair, Advisory Committee, 2nd China National Food Safety Risk Assessment Expert Committee. His other social responsibilities include: Deputy-chair, Expert Committee, Food Safety Committee of China State Council; President, Shanghai JS Life Sciences Institute (SJLSI); etc.

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Armin Braun, is Division Director of the Preclinical Pharmacology and Toxicology of the Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine. His main focus is the preclinical development and evaluation of new drugs for airway and immune diseases. Both safety and efficacy testings are performed under highest quality standard including GLP. He is deputy head of the Fraunhofer GLP facility in Hannover. Partners are the major pharmaceutical and biotech companies from Europe, US and Japan. In addition, immunotoxicology is an important field of expertise and he is acting as work package lead in the IMI EU project ImSAVAR (Immune safety avatar: nonclinical mimicking of the immune system effects of immunomodulatory therapies). Based on his knowledge alternative in vitro and ex vivo models are developed. Special focus is given to human organotypic tissue culture systems e.g. using precision cut lung slice (PCLS) technique for testing lung toxicology, immune regulation and infection. In addition, tissue slices from lymph nodes, liver, heart, skin, colon and tumors are used and combined with microphysiological systems (MPS). His scientific work is funded by different EU and federal research agencies. He is member of the German center of lung research (DZL) and is coordinating iCAIR (Fraunhofer International Consortium for Anti-Infective Research), a collaboration project between Griffith University, Australia and Medical University Hannover MHH in Germany with Fraunhofer ITEM. Recently the iGUARD (integrated Guided Ultrafast Antiviral RNAi Drug development) was funded by the newly established SPRIND (Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen). University in Australia. Prof. Myeong Soo Lee is a principal researcher of the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine, South Korea. He received his PhD degree in 2004 from the Wonkwang University, Korea. He studies evidence based medicine for complementary medicine at Complementary Medicine, Peninsula Medical School as visiting researcher. He is adjunct professors of London South Bank University , UK, Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Lanzhou University, and Research Affiliate of Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

He is working as a member of RIGHT group and Chair of Guideline International Network Asia. He is co-chair of Clinical Studies IS of GP-TCM- RA. He is in charge of Cochrane Complementary Medicine Korea. He is editorial board of over 30 SCI journals. He has published over 600 SCIE journal articles. He is founded to be one of top 2% researchers in the world from 2021 to present.

Dr. Zhang Shi Ping is an associate professor at the School of Chinese Medicine at Hong Kong Baptist University. He is an experienced acupuncturist and herbalist with a specialization in Chinese medicine. His research interests are centered on the practical assessment of Chinese medicinal therapies in real-world settings and the incorporation of data analytics and AI into TCM telehealth services, particularly to promote self-care among elderly populations. He is currently engaged in research focused on using smartphones for the detection and monitoring of inflammation, a condition prevalent in various diseases, including COVID-19 and diabetes. In addition, Dr. Zhang is leading a clinical trial that evaluates the effectiveness of a new TCM product delivered via telehealth. He also serves as the director of ECBOT Limited, an innovative technology company supported by the Technology Start-up Support Scheme for Universities (TSSSU).

Following his role at Deloitte, he has held positions at VC and PE firms, such as Senior Associate at Ocean Equity Partners, Vice President at ARIA Funds of CLSA Capital Partners, and Executive Director at Hywin International. He also had experience in business management and served as Group General Manager at Gaia Group. Throughout his roles, Fred has accumulated experience across technology and business operations with a focus in university spin-offs, Healthcare technology, GreenTech, SaaS solutions, digital transformation, and more.

Dr. Stephen C.W. SZE obtained his BSc (1st Class Honors) in Biology from Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and PhD degree from Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is currently Associate Director & Assistant Professor at Golden Meditech Centre for NeuroRegeneration Sciences, HKBU. He paid an academic visit in 2023 to Professor KW Li’s Proteomics Unit, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He is dedicated to translational research and quality control in drug discovery from natural products (Chinese Medicine formulas and compounds) and regenerative medicine aimed at alleviating metabolic inflammation and mitigating neurodegeneration/inflammaging to bring about the much-desired healthy aging and disease prevention using approaches like stem cell, network/systems pharmacological and quantitative proteomics approaches. Dr Sze successfully licensed a patent (US9273105B2). A health supplement was launched in 2020. Professor Rickard Öste (1948); PhD 1984, Professor in Applied nutrition and food chemistry, Lund university, Sweden, 1995 – 2017. Leader of the research group at Lund university that developed liquid oat technology to produce a low-allergenic alternative to cow's milk. 1993 they founded the company exploiting the technology, eventually under the name Oatly AB, and developed it further together with Rickards brother Björn. He has 40 years’ experience of senior research and development in both academic and commercial contexts. His work focus both basic and applied food chemistry and nutrition. He is the author/co-author of more than 150 original scientific publications, reviews, and popular science as well as patents that are currently being industrially exploited. However, his major contributions are as an entrepreneur, using scientific knowledge to solve problems and utilize possibilities within the agro-food tech sector. Rickard and colleagues started the company Agrovision AB (early AI algorithms for grain quality 1993, later Pharma Vision Systems AB), Rickards instruments AB (1992), for bread volume measurements. Shelf-life stable ready pancake batter was developed, patented and marketed in United Pancakes (2003)

He has the last 15 years been leading his research and development activities with a base in his and his brothers' research company Aventure AB (www.aventureab.com) and it’s daughter companies. Projects include developments of new, patent protected food and biotech products with clincally proven health effects. Glucanova AB focus fiber and resistant starch products, DoubleGood AB (www.goodideadrinks.com) and Good Idea Inc (www.goodideadrinks.us) has a table water that reduces the blood sugar response from whole, carbohydrate rich main meals. Berry Lab AB exploit health effects of fruit and berries, established as well as lesser known. Outside the Aventure focus, but still food based, a new x-ray CT/MRI contrast media, a pharma concept that soon will be starting Phase 3 studies (2024).

He has received a significant numbers of awards and prizes for his achievements, and is a permanent fellow of The Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry.

He is also a Senior Advisor to the President and Vice-Chancellor and Honorary Professor of the School of Chinese Medicine.

Professor Lau started his career in a renowned Swiss-based multinational company, and was then involved in setting up biotechnology companies and has developed over a hundred products particularly in the area of biotechnology. He returned to the academia in 2013 and worked with various stakeholders to promote high-impact research, their translation and application through bridging the gap in technology readiness between academic inventions and real-life applications. Prior to joining HKBU, he was the Interim Associate Vice President (Innovation and Technology Development) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

In light of his expertise, Professor Lau serves various advisory roles in the industry, government, as well as supranational bodies. Professor Lau served as Advisor, Adjunct Investigator / Professor in a number of institutions and was a Senior Advisor to United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). He is also the founding Chairman of the Board of the DISH Global Centre for Food Safety & Quality, a non-profit alliance to promote food related collaborations among EU - Hong Kong / China / Asia Pacific.

Professor Lau has co-authored a number of peer-reviewed scientific articles and is the co-inventor of a number of patents. He has also co-developed five Chinese National Standards and is the recipient of the Beijing Municipal Technology Award and Chinese Medical and Technological Award. Professor Lau has also been awarded the International Leadership Award by the International Association for Food Protection in the United States in recognition of his contributions to food safety.

Professor Lau graduated from The University of Hong Kong with an honours bachelor of science degree in Animal and Plant Biotechnology and subsequently received scientific training at Indiana University (Bloomington) and Stanford University School of Medicine in the US. He also received his Master of Philosophy degree in Biology from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and PhD degree in Physiology from Peking University, China.

Dr Kazuaki MIYAGISHIMA studied medicine and received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Tokyo, Japan. He received an international diploma of public administration from the Ecole nationale d’Administration, France, and a doctorate degree in medical sciences from Showa University, Japan. After a postgraduate study in physiology, he joined the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare as medical officer. In 1994, he was assigned to the Food Safety Programme at the WHO headquarters, Geneva, as a scientist. In 1998 he became Associate Professor for public health and health policy at Kyoto University, Japan. In 2003, he was appointed Secretary, Codex Alimentarius Commission, by the Directors-General of FAO and WHO. In 2009, he joined the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) as Deputy Director General and Head of Scientific and Technical Department. He served as Director, Department of Food Safety and Zoonoses, World Health Organization, Geneva from 2013 to 2020. He is currently Visiting Professor at the Nagasaki University, Director of the Research Centre for Food Safety at Aeon Co. Ltd. and also serving as a member of the Global Steering Committee of the Global Food Safety Initiaitve.

Tom Heilandt is a German national and holds degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science.
He has worked for 25 years in international standardization of food as:

• Secretary of the FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission (2014-2023).
• Senior Officer in the Codex Secretariat responsible for communication (2005-2014).
• Secretary of the UNECE Working Party on Agricultural Quality Standards (1998-2005).

Previous work experiences: Scientific Affairs Officer in the Secretariat of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE)(1994-1998); Software engineer for expert systems at Aion and Trinzic Corp (1992-1994) and in chemical industry at Bayer (1990-1992).

Tom is a member of the:

• Administrative Council of the Foundation « André-Levesque pour l'avenir de la relation (FAR) », in the Institut de France;
• International Advisory Board of the Chinese Centre for Food Safety Risk Assessment;
• French Order of Agricultural Merit for his contribution to the establishment of the United Nations World Food Safety Day.

He has also served in the Small and Medium Enterprise Committee, and many others related to intellectual properties, innovation and technology development, and food and agricultural development. He is the founder and Chairman of Food Safety Consortium, a charitable organisation which has become the first WHO/FAO Codex Alimentarius NGO observer from China. He has also been appointed as a committee member of the National Technical Committee on Biometrology of China since 2009. Professor Lau served as Advisor, Adjunct Investigator / Professor in a number of institutions and was a Senior Advisor to United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). He is also the founding Chairman of the Board of the DISH Global Centre for Food Safety & Quality, a non-profit alliance to promote food related collaborations among EU - Hong Kong / China / Asia Pacific.

Professor Lau has co-authored a number of peer-reviewed scientific articles and is the co-inventor of a number of patents. He has also co-developed five Chinese National Standards and is the recipient of the Beijing Municipal Technology Award and Chinese Medical and Technological Award. Professor Lau has also been awarded the International Leadership Award by the International Association for Food Protection in the United States in recognition of his contributions to food safety.

Professor Lau graduated from The University of Hong Kong with an honours bachelor of science degree in Animal and Plant Biotechnology and subsequently received scientific training at Indiana University (Bloomington) and Stanford University School of Medicine in the US. He also received his Master of Philosophy degree in Biology from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and PhD degree in Physiology from Peking University, China.

Biography

Dr. Yong Wang, Professor/Principal investigator/Deputy director of the CAS-Key Laboratory of Synthetic Biology, CAS Center for Excellence in Molecular Plant Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He obtained his Ph.D. degree of biochemical engineering from East China University of Science & Technology, China in 2004 and was trained as a post-doctoral fellow at Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering in Tufts University, USA during Feb 2005 to Aug 2008. His research is centered on the design and assembly of recombinant microorganisms for the production of complex natural products. A particular focus is the elucidation of design principles for the production of unnatural natural compounds within the framework of the nascent field of synthetic biology. Major Research Areas: Synthetic Biology; Metabolic Engineering; Biochemical Engineering; Bioprocess Engineering. More than 110 papers have been published.
